About Us
Chapter History
On November 12, 2006, the Delta Iota Chapter of Sigma Delta Tau was founded at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). Since our local founding date 15 years ago, the Delta Iota chapter has proven to live by the dreams of our founders. Sigma Delta Tau develops a social consciousness and a commitment to think and act for the greater good. We live by our founding values of promoting academic achievement, building leadership skills, instilling a sense of philanthropy, and creating a lifelong bond of friendship.
National History
On March 25, 1917, seven young women founded Sigma Delta Tau at Cornell University. The founding sisters of SDT were discriminated against in the Greek community based on their religious beliefs, and thus created the first chapter of Sigma Delta Tau. SDT was founded as a sorority for those who were denied sisterhood based on their religious or cultural background. The seven founders of Sigma Delta Tau did not want to see other women’s hopes and dreams destroyed by discrimination and ignorance. Each one of these amazing women added her own identity to the newly formed sorority. Today, the membership of over 70,000 women has contributed to the overall success of Sigma Delta Tau.
The mission of Sigma Delta Tau is "to enrich the college experience of women of similar ideals, to build lasting friendships and to foster personal growth. Sigma Delta Tau shall encourage each member by providing intellectual, philanthropic, leadership and social opportunities within the framework of mutual respect and high ethical standards."
